How To Play Eruption

You may be cool, but you're not 'playing ‘Eruption' on the original Frankenstein in honor of its 40th anniversary' cool.

Eruption is an instrumental by Van Halen from their first album, Van Halen. Written and primarily performed by Eddie Van Halen, this electric guitar solo showcase is considered one of the most influential rock instrumentals of all time, appearing on many 'greatest guitar solos' lists, including a second place in a recent Guitar World poll. Hey guys take a look at my accurate step by step break down to the classic 'Eruption' solo!

Wolfgang Van Halen just posted a short, seemingly casual video of him playing his father's classic guitar instrumental, 'Eruption.'

His social media post reads, 'In honor of Eruption being recorded 40 years ago today, here's me playing it on the guitar it was recorded on.'

Years or even decades ago, when we were all blown away by 'Eruption' for the first time, who would have thought there would be a way for us to watch Edwards own son play the revolutionary instrumental on the very guitar that it was recorded on?

It was exactly 40 years ago yesterday that Eddie Van Halen recorded the wildly innovative instrumental, 'Eruption.' The date of Sept. 8th, 1977 was uncovered by Van Halen biographer, Greg Renoff, during his extensive interviews with original Van Halen producer, Ted Templeman. Here's the full story.

We admit that we're not too surprised to see this, as Wolf is proficient on guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards. We know that he is playing every instrument on his solo upcoming album. Thanks for sharing such a cool thing, Wolf!

Watch the video below. As you will see, the Wolfgang doesn't fall far from the Edward.

In this Eruption guitar lesson video series, I will show you how to play what is perhaps the most famous guitar solo ever recorded, note-for-note.

Eddie Van Halen brought the guitar playing world to it's knees when 'Eruption' came blasting at them off of Van Halen's debut album. The rapid-fire licks and the at-the-time bewildering tapping section where something guitarists everywhere had never heard before. In one quick solo track, Eddie Van Halen completely changed the guitar playing landscape, as millions of guitar players locked themselves into their rooms for years trying to figure out all of Eddie's licks.

In the first video lesson, I will start by performing all of Eruption from beginning to end. I will then teach you all of Eddie's guitar parts up until the tapping section.

The licks you will learn in this first video will be the most challenging of the entire solo by far. The tapping part may be what everyone knows, but this opening section is where you will need the serious chops.

At the beginning of the video I demonstrate the basic 3 note tapping pattern Eddie uses throughout the whole section. From there it is just simply a matter of memorizing the different arpeggios.

Hope you guys enjoy the lesson. We certainly can't get any bigger than this when it comes to famous solos. 🙂
